Started
in 1987 after the first IBCLC exam. The founders were: Sandy Stayanoff, Amy
Spangler, Sharon Birdseye, and Kim Bugg. Sandy was the first president, but had
to step down at which time Sharon became president. Amy and Sharon wrote the
first bylaws and the focus of SELCA was on education. Lunch and Learns were
offered and then conferences were started.

At
first, SELCA drew in attendees and members by word of mouth, then mailings. The
states surrounding Georgia were often represented at
meetings. Some offerings were held in Birmingham with Glenda Dickerson
organizing, but mainly the meetings were in Georgia.

SELCA's
membership has included: Dawn Houston, the highest scoring
IBCLC in 1996, Melissa Vickers the current USLCA
newsletter editor, Ann Calandro (first SELCA newsletter editor) ILCA representative, Amy Spangler past
ILCA president and Glenda Dickerson current USLCA
president.
