Revised
Standards and Evaluation Criteria
WHO and
UNICEF have released a revision of the Baby-Friendly standards and
evaluation criteria, as well as the training program.
Revisions include:

Reinforce
and/or clarify the actual meaning of the steps
-
Integrate
HIV/AIDS and birth intervention challenges
-
Added optional
modules on mother-friendly practices to the current assessment tools
-
Expanded
training expectations from 18 to 20 hours for maternity staff
The Board of
Directors of Baby-Friendly USA will decide and schedule the phasing-in of
the new expectations at the annual meeting this fall. Information will be
circulated to designated and certificate of intent hospitals. Adequate time
will be allowed for designated and certificate of intent facilities to
integrate the new expectations of the criteria and guidelines.

Example:
Mother-infant
pairs (MI) D/C per month = 100
Mother-infant
pairs breastfeeding (B) at D/C = 85
Mother-infant
pairs breastfeeding exclusively (BE) at D/C= 75
Overall
breastfeeding rate=85% (B/MI = Overall rate)
Exclusive
breastfeeding rate=88% (BE/B = Exclusive rate)
