SELCA Goals

       2. Enhance the reputation, image and credibility of International Board Certified Lactation   Consultants according to the Scope of Practice for International Board Certified Lactation Consultants.

       3. Provide continuing education for the membership and the surrounding community.

SELCA is a chapter of the United States Lactation Consultant Association (USLCA).

USLCA is the national affiliate of the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA). Membership in USLCA is bundled with membership in ILCA. The national affiliate can concentrate energy and funding on issues pertinent only to USA based IBCLC's

ILCA is the professional association for International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and other health care professionals who care for breastfeeding families. ILCA is a non-governmental organization (NGO) with UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO). ILCA provides official representatives to many organizations, including the World Health Assembly, Codex Alimentarius, Food and Agriculture Organization, International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, Inc., World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), United Nations and the World Forum for Early Child Care and Education .  

ILCA has more than 4,000 members from 50 nations, and includes a wide variety of health professionals, including IBCLCs, midwives, nurses, physicians and medical practitioners, childbirth educators, dietitians, and many more. ILCA members are also maternal and infant health advocates, public health specialists, and volunteer support counselors. ILCA publishes the Journal of Human Lactation (JHL). The JHL includes research articles as well as reviews of books and audiovisual marterials. The JHL is published quarterly.
