100 and counting . . . Licensed Lactation Consultants in Georgia!

Dear SELCA members,

We are happy to announce that the 100th lactation consultant license was issued this week!  Congratulations! The many applications that have been submitted recently will continue to be processed by the Georgia Secretary of State’s office. Those who meet the requisites for licensure can still apply, as well.

Many have questions about a recent lawsuit filed by a libertarian organization, the Institute for Justice of Arlington, VA, on behalf of Mary Jackson and ROSE against the Georgia Lactation Consultant Practice Act.  The merits of this case have not been heard by a judge. No permanent injunction has been issued. The Act has not been repealed. However, while the lawsuit is pending, enforcement against unlicensed practice will be stayed.

We value the work of our colleagues across the spectrum of lactation support, and as an organization remain steadfast to our purpose: to serve as a network for lactation professionals and to enhance the reputation, image and credibility of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants.  We hope for a collaborative and expeditious resolution of the current concern. As we embark on a new breastfeeding support paradigm in Georgia, we look forward to mothers and babies having increased access to clinical care and to the IBCLC being recognized as a vital part of the clinical healthcare team. Please refer to the SELCA.info website for Ten Easy Steps to Becoming a Georgia Licensed Lactation Consultant and more information about why and how we support licensure. We look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting, August 18th at 10 am.

Sincerely,

Southeastern Lactation Consultants Association (SELCA) Board of Directors
