#LoveonTop…Top off National Breastfeeding Month with Black Breastfeeding Week!

#LoveonTop is the theme of this year’s Black Breastfeeding week… as parents, as lactation supporters, as care-givers, as a society, love should encompass what we do.
By now, in this 6th year of celebration, we hope the question “why is Black Breastfeeding Week important?” doesn’t still need to be asked or answered.  Communities deserve answers from within, safe spaces that account for lived experiences in providing support are crucial, and African-American families, who face disparities in healthcare, should be celebrated and supported in their efforts.   It it is important to honor those who began the movement and their reasons for doing so.  Check out this interview where the founders explain why Black Breastfeeding Week is so important.
SELCA supports those who help families breastfeed, and during Black Breastfeeding Week we will acknowledge the work that some of our African-American SELCA members are doing.  In recognizing the need black mothers have for support, we acknowledge the need for more black IBCLCs, because #blackwomenbreastfeed and culturally competent care is significant.  SELCA remains committed to equity and diversity in lactation support.
Understand that BBW is important, but at a loss of how to celebrate? SELCA is here to help- check out these ideas from Blackbreastfeedingweek.org, or this inspiration from 1000 Days.  Let us know of any events you are holding at contact@selca.info!
